Pleats, Please

As I'm frantically packing to go to Surabaya, my hometown, everything in my path looks like a shipwreck! Don't you hate packing? I never know what to bring, then comes the problem of selecting clothes you love but ending up with no actual outfits because each single piece just doesn't look good together! I'm such an over-packer, I always think I'll need things that I don't. Are any of you like that?

Amidst all this mess, I'll have my momentary calm in writing down and blogging for a bit. I wore this outfit recently to go to a farewell party followed by some cocktails with friends. We all have our LBDs, I happen to have quite a few (although sometimes I get bored of it too)! Accordion pleats that are not just confined to schoolgirl skirts seem to be making a comeback these days...

I personally think that the point of LBDs is for you to have fun accessorising! Pretty much everything goes with black, so to keep things a little less dull I added a waist belt, leopard print pony hair platforms, a green clutch and a colourful necklace!

Definitely wouldn't have gotten this dress hadn't it been for the little layered pop of neon pink at the bottom. I like how under different lighting you can see through the sheerness of the black outer layer.

I am in LOVE with this shoe! It's tall, is leopard printed calf hair (!!) and is super comfortable to wear.

Since my accessories take centre stage, here's a little close up to show you the details. I love Tom Binns' jewellery but at $1000 a piece, I think I'll get it in better days to come. I found this Tom Binns-ish necklace at a steal in a local Singaporean boutique called Femme-X for S$25!

It's finally time to me to board the plane and go to my personal food heaven, Surabaya. If any of you are as big a glutton as I am, I'd recommend you take a weekend jaunt down to my little hometown :)

Master Class: Vogue UK September 2011

Freja Beha Erichson graces the cover for the September issue of Vogue UK. She also features in a stunning, albeit melancholy, editorial with Arizona Muse. These girls have been everywhere in the past year. Along with Anja Rubik and maybe Lara Stone, I'm pretty sure they have been to more runways, covers and editorials in the high fashion circuit. It's also rumoured that Freja and Arizona have been "romantically linked" this past runway season! We'll wait and see how that bit of gossip develops...

Titled "Master Class," it is shot by Mario Testino.

To me, it's a mix of lots of different elements. It echoes the great Dutch artist, Johannes Vermeer who painted works like The Girl with the Pearl Earring. At the same time, it has a religious, nun-like undertone. Then there's something a little dead and robotic about the models too.

Don't you love the moody, monochromatic atmosphere of all this? It makes nuns and being conservative look so fashionable. Those accessories are really something worth coveting!

Coveting Cold Weather: Fall 2011

Many designers have finalised their ad campaigns for the Fall 2011 season and my, what a lavish spread it is! I thought I would show several of the ones that caught my eye, whether good or bad. I feel like ad campaigns should exude an attitude and most importantly, a concept. It's not only about selling beautiful clothes but a certain lifestyle that comes with it and that we consumers, would want to buy in the hopes of tangibly encapsulating the attitude of the campaign.

Dolce & Gabbana

I always love the plurality of the Dolce & Gabbana campaigns. It's never one, two or even three people but always a group. The composition exudes their signature Italian "refined" glamour. Love the juxtaposition of the androgyny and femme fatales. Makes me want to wear their dresses with those gorgeous blazers. Can you spot all the famous model faces in the campaign?

Givenchy

They have got to be one of my favourite fashion houses over the past several years. I like the slightly masculine (but not too man-repeller) attitude of their clothes. It's edgy, chic but embraces lots of femininity all at the same time. This ad campaign also features Naomi Campbell but I prefer Mariacarla Boscono all the way! Look at that lushness but it's really quite a simple campaign.

Gucci

I think their Fall 2011 really captures a certain attitude that many other campaigns may not have. The heavy fur, jewel-toned colours and overall hue of the campaign makes for a visual feast. Simple but interesting, contrasts between light and darkness - I love it!
Props to Frida Giannini for really turning Gucci into something not so logo oriented that made the brand really tacky for a while. Abbey Lee-Kershaw looks sublime in these photos.

Versace

I WOULD DIE (live and die again) IN THIS DRESS! It's so beautiful! Opulence with such a clean, androgynous aesthetic that's contradictory to the dress itself. Versace has steered itself to a direction that is so much more pleasing to my eye in the last couple of years. I remember a time when it was all about skimpiness... and now Donatella finally understands the impact of glamorous understated clothes that hint at the female figure rather than "Hello, I'm $50 an hour."
Now, can someone please adopt me and buy me this dress? kthx.

Roberto Cavalli

OK, I admit I was surprised at the amount of designers' ad campaigns I liked that I usually didn't like. Case and point: Roberto Cavalli. For those living in Singapore, you know how uglayyy as a hawker centre bin the ad campaigns they have plastered on the walls and windows in Mandarin Gallery are.
This dear friends, is captivating! I think I'm a sucker for contrasts: the dark and neutral coloured leopard prints really stand out against a luscious background of red, pink and golden leaves.
If only we all looked that good frolicking in Fall foliage... in full length silk dresses no less.

I've more campaigns to show you but it's a lot of pictures, so read on!

Stella McCartney

Natalia Vodianova can do no wrong but, Stella McCartney is known for her simple, minimalist look so I love that this campaign really captured her vision. The contrast between a lush, green manicured garden to the black and white portrait is great. The symmetry and clean lines are very Stella. So effective and effortless.

Prada

Actually not a big fan of some of Prada's clothes - definitely meant to stay on the runways and red carpets. I despised that colour blocked, pleated shift dress this season but LOVED their monkeys and stripes of last season. One pictures (above) caught my attention though. It's simple and their clothes are not ugly. I would gladly go hungry from their accessories like those divine clutches and genius trompe-l'oeil boots feature above. Also, those fur coats really would not hurt in Bostonian winters...

Proenza Schouler

Everyone knows Proenza Schouler's PS1 bags and how they're so cool and edgy and roomy and whatever else people get them for. Not saying they're not great bags, I'm sure they are and I would love to add one to my collection but look at this campaign! Their clothes speak volumes, so chic and interesting. One thing that makes this so outstanding from an artistic perspective is that the portrait is in the middle, unmarred by a busy background. Then on the edges they continued their version of a sort of ikat tribal pattern that is found throughout their collection. I love the continuity and thought of this campaign aesthetically.

Fendi

Initially, I wasn't a big fan of Fendi's ad campaign, found Anja Rubik's black curly hair a little too Chinese aunty to me. This picture is wonderful though. The blues that is found consistently in the background to the fact that Anja has no blue on her whatsoever. I wrote that I wanted those shoes in my "Shoe-o-graphy" post and they are even more gorgeous on! And please lah, that fur and tulle shirt/jacket thing is ravishing.

Nina Ricci

Less is more: pure elegance. Nina Ricci's dresses (for the exception of the spider-webbed atrocity worn by Christina Ricci) are so Parisian chic. Love her shoes too!

Blumarine

I haven't liked Blumarine's designs for quite some time now. They come up with stellar pieces here and there but sometimes it's just not that consistent or unique. Adriana Lima does the label justice with her Victoria's Secret Angel curves here. For a person who's lying in a bed of leaves for the entire campaign, no one can make it look sexier. Hello, teacher? No sorry, it's just Adriana Lima and her red lips.

DKNY

Rounding off the post with an ad campaign that I think, most of us can afford. The thing that irks me about DKNY is that their campaigns all look so NYC edgy-chic but their clothes in-store are a bit of a disappointment. I know all of us were not born supermodels who can make sacks look like fashion but, you'd think some of that Manhattanite attitude would translate.
Anyway, they look like they've got a fantastic collection ready for Fall and I am in complete love with everything these models are wearing. Capes (check), juicy colours, clean lines, great blazers, tailored aesthetic. Oooh let's go to DKNY right now!!

Hope I didn't bore all of you. For those of you who made it down this far - please give yourself a big pat on the back. Just wanted to share some inspiration, maybe this will help you think about what you want to get yourself for the upcoming Fall/Winter seasons.
For me, I just loved the creativity and artistic direction that these campaigns possessed. And of course, makes me jealous for those of you who can hoard something from each of these collections...

Metallic Keyholes

Went to Marina Bay Sands with my mum the other day to attend this jewellery thing at Mondial. We stayed there for about 15 minutes, had some champagne and my mum turns to me and says, "Tish, we have to get out of here now. Otherwise I'm going to buy everything in here! ... And that's not a good thing" My mum is the ultimate sucker for jewellery.

We headed up to Ku Dé Ta on the 57th floor of the hotel and continued our night there. Kept it casual with the outfit but jazzed it up a bit with some accessories. I was dying to wear a dress I got recently, but it seemed a little too formal, will have to debut it some time! Instead, I debuted my new rose gold Brian Atwood Maniacs! So in love with this pump: the shape, colour and height.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I need to get the guts to eventually start photographing outside and in daylight. Got inspired by Lanvin's Resort 2012 collection in a stairwell and thought it a good place to start. Not too many people take the stairs, so I don't exactly have to face public scrutiny while taking pictures of myself! Kinda like the gritty feeling of cement too.

These Brian Atwood babies were the brainchild of a collaboration between Atwood and Victoria Beckham. She loved the rose gold Rolex watch David Beckham got her so with her obsession for ultra high heels and Atwood's Maniacs, the rose gold colour took form. If I'm not mistaken, they were seen on her runway collection not too long ago.

I don't know if you can really define this as colour blocking but it definitely is colour combining? Took out one of my favourite tops from Maxstudio.com since I haven't worn it in a while. I love the unique details at the top and the back because it's a mixture of chiffon that's "embroidered" (I don't think I can really call it embroidery because it's textured and floaty) and pearl beads covered in the same green chiffon. This is also the first time in about 3 months (with the exception of my time in Europe) that I've worn trousers/leggings. Singapore is so hot! I'm sure anyone anywhere will agree with me on how hot this summer has been.

You Know I'm No Good: Amy Winehouse

As we all know, Amy Winehouse passed away on the 23 July 2011 at the young age of 27. The singer whose cause of death is still unknown, but is suspected to be due to emphysema, had hits such as "Rehab" and "Valerie". Despite her public battle with drugs and alcohol, there is no doubt that Winehouse made great music; something I sing along to in my shower.

Although there are many bad aspects we can tear Amy down for, she not only made music that is distinct, but also had a quirky fashion sense that is immediately recognisable. With her winged eyeliner, beehive and tattoos, Amy represented an updated look of a '60s girl complete with patterned dresses and hot pants.

Her signature look has inspired a Vogue Italia editorial shot in 2007 by Steven Meisel. I think it's one of the most gorgeous and textural editorials I've seen in a while. It features Hanne Gaby Odiele, Kinga Rajzak, Lara Stone, Maryna Linchuk and Meghan Collison. The use of colours and patterns is stunning! Take a look at some of the pictures I've selected:

These pictures are really entrancing. At first, you don't really know where to look because there are so many patterns going on but Steven Meisel did a fantastic job capturing the models and their clothes.

While she may not be someone to aspire to, there is no doubt that her style resonates with many. As a result, beautiful editorials such as this are created. Apologies for the overload of pictures, I was so captivated by the patterns!

Neo-navy Leopard

Just wanted to do a really quick outfit post to show you the bargain of a shirt I got from the Zara sale the other week! I'm very wary of leopard prints just because I feel a lot of them look a bit tacky, especially when worn incorrectly. Also, I'm not that big a fan of leopard prints (unless done correctly like Dolce&Gabbana) to begin with. As a solution, I went and bought a shirt that technically has leopard prints on it but it's in blue! So you can't really tell they're leopard unless you really look for it.

Here's my little weekend outfit while lounging on my balcony deck - of course, sipping some cocktails! Except for the fact that the pictures aren't actually on my balcony... awkward! Anyway, snapped some quick shots after I came home from watching Transformers 3! Singapore has been so hot lately that I can't even fathom to think of wearing anything remotely related to pants.

Tried carrying the bag and it was so awkward, so I just got rid of it and put it on my bed.

So can you tell it's leopard print? I think the white and blue makes it much more subdued to wear rather than traditional leopard print that I find a little daunting to incorporate into my wardrobe.

My mother will not (for the life of me) get me a Hermès collier de chien bracelet! While seeing how cool it really is to "wear" one, I got myself a little Hermès-inspired CDC in the hopes of convincing her how good it looks haha! Tactics, dear friends, tactics! Yet, she allows me to get their watch (wearing it) and their bag (above)!

I know some girls really love their heels and I don't blame them because it makes your gams look like they belong to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (look at my Transformers reference!) but, heels aren't healthy for your feet if you wear it for too long and too often.

In cases like this, I definitely turn to my trusty flats. I got these while I was travelling in Europe for such a bargain! Aside from Tory Burch and Lanvin, I don't often find ballet flats that look good on my flat feet so these Gucci ones were a must-have the minute I tried them on :)
A major plus point is that they're not those super tacky Gucci flats that you can see from a mile away with their brown logos... it's silver (easy to match) and understated (big advantage!).

Shoe-o-graphy

I think any girl can understand why we have shoe fetishes. With the amount of heels, booties, lace-ups, stilettos, wedges, espadrilles, platforms... and you name it out there; it really leaves no room for anyone not to like something.

As a result of my trolling around different websites for shoes I fantasise about... these are some gorgeous shoes to add to my collection when I have stacks of money the size of the Empire State Building. And by then these shoes will be so outdated! Most of the shoes are from F/W '11 collections of the respective brands - feel free to ask me more in the comments!

I could imagine wearing these heels a million different ways and in a million different ways, it could spruce up an outfit. They're all so beautifully crafted (as we all know) but they're so unique, such stunners in their own way. But of course, if I were to hoard all of these in one season; I think I'd really have to pawn my life to some mindless job just so I can wear these sublime beauties to work.

Colour Me Mine

I've been so sick these past two weeks that I've been house bound whilst coughing and sneezing and feeling downright lousy. So I've managed to hoard a bunch of images that have given me a little inspiration while I wait to recover.

I used to think I was a colourful girl with a wardrobe that exhibited colours of the rainbow, but now that I actually try and curate my clothes... that is sadly not the case. In retrospect, it's slightly strange because as an arts student I was always about the colour - I never painted a work that was purely black and white. Yet, my wardrobe is so neutral! Blacks, beiges, looots of white and my supposed subconscious colour of choice, green.

So here's to hoping these colourful images will strike some dormant technicoloured nerve and really go out there and get myself more varied clothes! In my defence, as the colour blocking-neon trend has been everywhere, I've gladly added oranges, fuschias, blues and purples to my growing collection ;)

Peek, If You Dare

So here goes my first outfit post in a LONG time! I just had the idea of shooting it after getting back from a farewell dinner and drinks at Senso and Ku De Ta with my relatives so excuse the bad lighting and background. It really means I need to either a) get a WILLING photographer, or b) get one of those remote controlled timer things and c) get the balls to photograph myself in broad daylight in front of people!

So here's a new blouse I got from the recent Topshop sale! Caught my eye right away because it's flowy and it's got an awesome open back. I love anything that has an unexpected touch to something quite conservative looking - and I'm a sucker for drop backs, open backs, keyhole backs, you name it. Don't you think showing your back is more sophisticated than flaunting decolletage?

It's too bad you can't see the detail on my skirt because it's black crocheted fabric that gives a slightly peekaboo effect. Blame it on the bad lighting and those unsightly cables! So shameful...

I love these shoes! Scored them at a great Bally sale some time ago - it's so 1920's art deco. Plus, they're really comfortable that I could wear them all day without getting tired.

A couple of silly pictures before I round off the post. I was probably singing to Maroon 5 there, as usual, jamming it out in my room alone! Also, wanted to show you guys the rings my mum got made for me - first two pieces of real jewellery (actually sort of my matches my earrings too, another piece my mum got).

No Photoshop!

I wanted to do an outfit post today but I don't have photoshop! The one I installed doesn't work (just my luck) as it says that there's an error with missing/invalid information. BIG BOO HOO!

So with non-edited pictures - I shan't post an outfit up today. Someone tell me what to do! I badly need photoshop now! The photoshop I had (and that worked) was lost along with my stolen macbook. So there goes a whole lotta work.

In the meanwhile here's one of my favourite Vogue US editorials featuring the sublime Natalia Vodianova. I'm in love with Alice in Wonderland so there's no doubt that this shoot just calls my name - plus, it features some awesome designers as the other characters of Alice in Wonderland. See if you can name them!

Azzedine Alaïa Couture: Fall 2011

I'm slightly late in reviewing the Couture collection for Fall 2011 but Alaïa has got to be one of my favourite shows of the season! Welcoming the designer back to the couture runways after an eight-year hiatus seemed like an instant hit with all those attending the show.

I really love the proportions and silhouette Alaïa has opted for: curvy, voluminous yet so sleek. Not too sure why I'm so drawn to bell-shaped silhouettes but perhaps it's due to my lack of curves! Cinched waists look good on pretty much anyone, I think. So here are some pieces that really should have a place in our wardrobes.

Loving the mixture of textures - a tough croc-stamped leather paired with the softness of fur. Imagine that top with a tuxedo blazer!

The skirts never fail to get me, it's got the perfect amount of volume and flounce. Would look amazing during the winter paired with opaque tights. The juxtaposition of a structure jacket is great too.

Alaïa's signature laser cutting is feature on his velvet dresses. This is such transitional dressing, I feel like you could wear this during the summer (albeit the black colour) with a bright heel and bag. The peter pan collar is a nice whimsical touch to an otherwise mature cocktail dress.

Not only is the silhouette great but Alaïa has a really well edited collection of his signature looks that amounts to a strong show. He knows what works well and the craftsmanship is just excellent (he's worked with the same mill for 30 years!). For a fall collection that is usually more sombre and covered up, this collection really has the right amount of exposure that would make these pieces really versatile in anyone's wardrobe.

Let's hope he continues to show in the next seasons to come!

Summer Lovin'

I'm such a non-committal person but something always brings me back to this blog. My interest and love for fashion will probably never dissipate - and that, I can assure you.

So it's the middle of summer and the weather's hot, the sun swelters long into the day as we lounge on chairs (and hopefully drink some cocktails) to pass the time. I've been having a fabulous time travelling to Europe and deciding that this blog needs a more coherent (slightly revamped) direction.

In the meantime, enjoy some of these lovely pictures shot by none other than Mr. Tommy Ton of Jak&Jil fame. I am not a big fan of taking pictures of my outfits (no matter how "FAB" my outfits are since I'm no model and the summer makes me feel like a rotund hippopotamus!), but I may just put some up if and when I feel like it... and if you readers want some!

Next pant cuffs on my list! Such a whimsical little detail that is so easy to do on your own too.

And lastly, as much as I am trying to get colour into my unusually neutral wardrobe consisting of beiges, whites and blacks... I do still love a good summery, breezy and oh-so-light look for the summer. It looks like you could never sweat in such an ensemble. I'm really loving the silhouette too - need to get myself a properly A-line skirt.

J'ADR!

At this current point in time, yes now, right now! As you are sitting in your chair... could you name me anyone more fabulous and over the top as Anna Dello Russo?
She's the darling of street style photographers and more recently, has penetrated the world of publications. Since when have industry insiders become the face of the industry they work in? It used to be ruled by celebrities and models but now, editors and fashion insiders are cozying in on this trend.

Just wanted to do a quick shout out to the fabulous Miss Anna Dello Russo (whom I covered in an earlier post) for her amazing style and photoshoot with Net-A-Porter. Took some screen caps so that I can go drool over them myself.

Now tell me, can anyone get away with this on a daily basis? Only Anna Dello Russo and let me tell you, J'ADR! She's so fierce and loves fashion for what it is. Oh and, never wears the same clothes twice, who wouldn't kill for a non-recyclable wardrobe like that?

What ifs...

For us little people, there are many what ifs. What if this happened instead of that? What if I had gotten this shoe instead of that?

Yeah, it's frivolous to even think of what ifs for shoes, but hey! to us girls it does matter (note to all the men out there). So while I was carousing the Singapore shops over the Winter break, I tried on these McQueen babies.

THEY. ARE. GORGEOUS.

Let me tell you that. Great platform for its height but that doesn't even matter when you're wearing the foot's equivalent of a Picasso! I was also told that the shoe I was trying was the ONLY piece to be imported into Singapore - another reason why I fell in love with them. Not too mention their $3000 price tag - ya, no big deal. It's just spare change ;)

The store manager told me about the "great deal" I was getting since it's originally $6500, still. At this day and age, it's not exactly NORMAL per se for a 19-year old to go and spend $3000 for a pair of shoes. At the end of the day, I'm still a happy child. Even if my life is deprived of this magnificent piece.

Because....

I got these shoes! The leopard print Miu Mius that I'm still totally in love with. So what if I had gotten the McQueens? That's okay, let me just go stroke my Miu Mius now.........

Biiiig Hiatus!

As 2011 is off to a running (or more like a nice brisk walking) start, I decided that it was high time I stop ignoring this blog! I think that's one of my biggest problems: Consistency.
I'm not going to plague you with New Year's Resolutions or excuses (I don't do very well with both) but I have been very caught up with college life.

The winter months is in full swing and I thought I'd leave you with a lovely photograph of great winter dressing. Probably not made for the snow we get in Boston though - or non-snow in Singapore.

So um, who isn't in love with Givenchy's Fall Couture 2010? I'd definitely try and break into the design house, smash a couple of windows and steal a whole rack of dresses if I could. What a cunning plan!

No but really, these creations are sublime. In other words, to DIE FOR! Can R. Tisci do no wrong? The combination of lace, feathers, leather and just the right amount of bling really amounts to a unique Couture show unlike most.

Oh my goodness, I seriously drool everytime my eyes land on that picture. Too beautiful for words. Then again, if I were to wear something like that, (of course the dress being sublime on its own) wouldn't I look kind of... disproportionate? No more just like, "whaaat are you wearing?" Looks great on models, not sure on me. Then again, who knows? I'll just have to see it on the red carpet one day maybe. Still, I'd kill to own one of those. Really, Tisci be warned, I'll hunt you down!

Oh my Dior!

In the fashion world, I'm probably light-years late but every season seems to move so fast that sometimes, I can't keep up! Specially when life sort of gets in the way and I can't spend all day in front of my beloved computer aimlessly surfing the countless troves that is the world wide web.

I've been meaning to take a gooood look (and by good look, I mean flipping through the images of each collection one by one) at the Couture season's offerings and I'm just in loooove with Dior's. Galliano never fails to deliver, he's really just a genius at his craft.

I'm a person who loves flowers and sometimes I get bored and just look up the names of different flowers on the internet (yes, because I'm OCD like that) so it was sort of natural that I would love this collection. Flowers totally make you happy and make a room just look that much nicer, don't you think? Dahlias, hydrangeas, magnolias - oh so nice! Wouldn't it be an absolute dream to wear one of these dresses?

Too many nice things to choose from, I'm just going to flood you with pictures of his Dior's Fall Couture collection now :)

Black and White World

First of all, I apologise for the lack of posts recently! I just came back from Jakarta and didn't bring my computer (gasp!) so I couldn't upload any of photos.

Now, let me ask you a question. Do you have those days where you want to feel a little bit more colourful but then just end up in monochrome? I have those days, A LOT. It's not like I'm complaining because I'm a person who adores 'non-colour' (that being white, black and shades of beige), plus it's all the rage, non?

I think white shirts are my safety. As I look into my wardrobe, there's a whole ROW just dedicated to white shirts (also because I'm slightly OCD, my wardrobe is arranged by colour... (I'm not the only one am I?))

Another question just because I'm curious. Do you guys have go-to outfits? When you have one of those days where you kinda feel 'blah' but want to sort of look good at the same time? (Oookay, so who doesn't want to look good but you get what I mean!) I think black and white is definitely my go-to colour palette.

I'm also learning how to be a little bit more concise when I select what goes into my bag. I was am one of those people who carry their whole world in their bag so carrying this little clutch was definitely... different to say the least. I usually only carry clutches on nights out but thought that I'd try it out just to see if I can survive on the basics.

So I'm going to SingFest tomorrow and I'm super excited! Really need to update the blog with a new outfit post but I'm in the process of picking and editing some pictures to put up.

In the meantime, let me share with you my excitement to go and see Kanye West tomorrow! And Lupe Fiasco and Kool & The Gang (yeah, cos I'm old school like that...)
Oh and not to mention that I love festival gear, it's taken the summer by storm! Kate Moss and her denim shorts, boots and boho chic top. Ahhh I'll make sure to document everything well tomorrow.

Recently, I've been going through style.com while being the bum I usually am during the summer. I've also been nerdily observing the Singapore sky these past week and when you usually cannot see the stars when you look directly above you, it's quite the 'occasion'! Sort of strange how weather works since it's been storming a lot due to the typhoons in the area.

Anyway, I'm so boring and nerdy because I'm talking about the weather. Yes, that's what I do in my spare time... So I leave you with a few images that have inspired me to hunt for a couple of pieces that have awesome constellations and satellite images on them (probably not from Christoper Kane [although I'm actually very tempted to get something from his Cruise 2011]...)

Of flyers and flowers

Have you ever had one of those days where you felt like you were doing a million things at once? I have and this was definitely one of them…

I’m not complaining, it’s just there’s one thing after another (after another) and you wonder how it all sort of just piled up on top of one another. Oh, trust me; I’ve experienced this academically and socially, the former being slightly more torturous.

So there comes this dilemma, what exactly are you going to wear to all these events without looking tired and awkward going from one place to another? With the venues all over the place, it’s not like I could have a glamorous wardrobe change in a snap, crackle and pop of a finger. How I wish I were Anna Dello Russo in these situations!

With Singapore’s humid, stormy weather as of late; I ended up just wearing a really simple ensemble that I thought could just take me from the opening of the flower exhibition to a cocktail flight on the Singapore flyer to a nice dinner at Dempsey.

While I attempt to distract you with breathtaking pictures of the Singapore skyline as seen from the flyer... Jeans you say? I know, wearing jeans to nice places when you have the option of cute dresses and flirty skirts? But hey, it’s versatile and the ability you have to dress it up or down just sealed the deal.

Summer: High on Life

The summer is finally here (actually, it has been for the past 2 months...) and here comes my re-first post. I say "re-first post" not because the blog is new, but because it's a fresh start to an attempt at keeping one.

You see, I don't know if it's just a problem with me or there is a worldwide epidemic but I'm a person who is just so good at procrastinating (I think it's a disease and not just a condition...) and is a commitment-phobe (again, can someone prescribe me something?!? I swear it's not just a state of mind) that I just found it hard to have to pose, take pictures, edit, upload, crop, bling (mmm okay, maybe not) and blog about it all. So I reached for the next best solution: desertion. Ooh what a dreaded word, no one wants to hear about being deserted. Or neglected. Deserted and neglected - what a combo!

So yeah, it's still a bit of a hassle but what thing is worth it without having the hassle? Even ice cream and shopping comes with calories and finances. Next time, I'll put my money where my mouth is when I decide to say "Oooh, blogging. It's eeeeeasyyy!" Now I'm sure I can hear a collective groan from all you bloggers out there at how time-consuming it can be.

Nonetheless it's the summer and what better way to pass the time than to share my 'oh-so-important' thoughts with the blogosphere? So, here's a series of shots I took after having dinner with a friend whom I haven't met in over a year! It's terrible of me but sometimes, don't you just find it so hard to keep in touch with people you promised to keep in touch with? Or is it just me?

We had a wonderful dinner to summarise the night and I don't know why it took us this long to see each other again. With all my friends scattered halfway across the world, you really just have to take advantage of the limited time you actually have and as for the outfit... just something easy and comfortable to wear for a day out.

Ready?

I think I'm finally ready to dive right in and get this all re-started. There is no excuse for me to actually, in the first place, abandon this blog but I guess life sort of just caught up with me. Now I've sort of found a nice equilibrium (more or less) and hopefully, all goes well!

I've also decided to take this blog in a rather new direction, already done and dusted but I wasn't quite happy with where it was headed and the content of all of it. I'll be deleting a lot of my older posts just because now when I look at it, it elicits more of a "WHAT WAS I THINKING?!?" more that anything else. It was difficult enough managing two different blogs (of which I don't even know why I decided to start a new one to begin with) but now the decision has been made that it really should be more of a lifestyle thing instead of keeping personal and 'fashionable' life separate - because really, my fashion revolves around my life.

So, to new beginnings or rather, second beginnings. No matter, what better way to start again during Couture season?

Harper's Bazaar: November 2009

This is a quick and slightly frivolous and HIGHLY INDULGENT entry; but I'm going to do it anyway...

So yes, it's mightily self-indulgent but the entry I did quite a while back about the BCBG fashion party made it to Harper's Bazaar Singapore. So we had our photos taken and were featured in the magazine - albeit in the corner where most people don't look anyway.
As I said, frivolous and self-indulgent but hey, what girl could resist?

Oh and if you are wondering, I'm wearing Banana Republic tuxedo pants, Basso&Brooke shirt and Lauren Merkin clutch.

P.S: I'm so sorry for the lack of entries these days, I've been so BUSY moving and everything and it just got to the the point where I was unmotivated to do anything. I promise I'll be back for some more action : )

Dior in a Frame

I went to Quentin Shih's exhibition quite a while back and only did I realise I took some pictures on my iPhone (so excuse for the marvelously inexcusable wash of colour).

Many people probably don't know that an 'Ion Art' even exists because most people are confined to the lower vicinity of this segregating mall (aka: the Basements). It is located on the top floor, tucked away in a very unassuming corner.

Nevertheless, Quentin Shih's exhibition is up titled "Stranger in a Box". It involves all of the Dior models or at least clothes being encased in a clear box with all sorts of stereotypical 'Chinese' onlookers. He said it is meant to depict the detachment between the two cultures and even through globalisation and increasing integration; somehow something like Dior and China will never become unanimous.

Anyway, all I can say is the concept is simply marvelous. I love the juxtaposition of the haute couture with commie guards, factory workers, school children or official-looking people. However, I think everything's slightly too repetitive and not in that cohesive, coherent way. It is constantly a Caucasian woman in a box, wearing no other than Dior with a couple of Chinese onlookers around her set somewhere in industrial China.

Nevertheless, ION art is somewhat of a sanctuary I've discovered. Barely anyone goes there and it's really quiet, peaceful and somewhat clinical (not to mention sterilised?). You get a bunch of chairs grouped nonchalantly, each a piece of art on its own.

It's extremely tranquil and away from the hustle and bustle of ION. It's strange really and somewhat relieving, I actually like that place. I sat there for quite a while just contemplating (sounds loner-ish, I know). But I hope you'll get to enjoy it as much as I do: I'm also an art-junkie (I spent about 3 days in the Louvre, last time I was in Paris for the gazillionth time).

Anna the Great

I finally got round to watching 'The September Issue' today. I know it's late, we're in October, yes, yes. But I do still have the issue sitting all fashionable and trendy in my magazine rack.

So I must admit, that I love Anna Wintour a little more now. Not only is she the editor-in-chief of one of the world's go-to fashion magazine, she's also much more than that. Having such an insight to the cut-throat world of fashion and dishing out magazines every month must be tough stuff and Anna seems dead right for the job: decisive, fashion-forward and a visionary.

Even through her cold, inscrutable stares; there's something more that she possesses and she is definitely not the woman most people portray her to be. Anna does what a girl gotta do, she creates VOGUE for heaven's sake! That in itself seems enough of an excuse to be a little cranky, a little demanding and downright picky. But really, it seems like she's not as cold and harsh and fearsome as some people make her out to be, although I do agree that she's definitely someone you wouldn't want to mess with.

While in the movie, I was thinking to myself that in reality; Anna has a very distinct style that she sticks to day in and out. Unlike her other international Vogue counterparts (i.e.: Carine Roitfeld, Anna Dello Russo, etc.) her sense of style is a lot more conventional (yet still fashionable) and more 'proper'. She definitely has a solid foundation of who she is as the matriarch of the fashion world.

I noticed that she usually wears knee-length, printed dresses with lots of colour, are fitted at the top and a little flared or A-line at the bottom. These dresses either have a little sleeve or are cropped like a tank top (second and third picture). To top it off, when Anna is out and about, she always has a chic, statement coat in her signature fur or some other printed material. Of course, the sunglasses, bob, heels and usually a simple bling-y necklace complete her look.

On top of it all, Anna's also a mother. Bee Shaffer is really beautiful and to have a mother like Anna Wintour, gosh! your wardrobe must be the absolute envy of those around you. Bee's currently studying to be a lawyer and she's seen out and about partying with the elite of New York City's prime society if not by her mother's side at various fashionable events.

I just had to mention her because Bee really is something to reckon with - perhaps even a role model in the future?

Anyway, respect to Anna Wintour who has guided us through our fashionable years.

Vogue, Will You Please?

Even if I sit here with the September Issue of Paris Vogue, I still can't get any inspiration! For what? For everything! I find Paris Vogue encompasses everything necessary for daily life from fashion to culture to inspiration to whatever else you can dream of. So why do I all of a sudden feel so uninspired?

For all the Roitfelds, Alts, Hyunhs and Saglios in the world cannot help me now. I just feel lazy!

Time to Update the Wardrobe

If we were to live in a four-seasoned country, everyone we meet would be bundled up in layers of clothes. Right about now would be the start to Autumn where leaves turn into radiant shades of yellow, orange and red. But alas, Singapore's experiencing its monsoon season.

Even through the rainy weather, I suppose that could substitute for the 'cold' season because technically, when it rains, it does get colder right? Well, recently I attended the Maxstudio.com Fashion Show in Paragon and I must say that their Fall/Winter line seems perfectly suitable for weather like ours.

Yes it's a little more covered up, but it's nothing ridiculously out of place. There are some knits and jackets (to get us through the sub-zero temperatures of Singapore malls and movie theatres) and cute dresses to brave the humid weather.

Maxstudio is a brand that's all about fashionable comfort. It's not overly trendy but has pieces that will get you through more than one season. It's something that every recessionista should have in their wardrobe! I do agree that some of their pieces are catered to an older generation but with a mixture of their eponymous Maxstudio line and Studio M, there's something for everyone.

One critique I must add however, is the styling of the show. Each individual piece presented is fine on its own; yet when combined with the wrong counterpart, one wouldn't look twice at such an outfit. It was a shame to see some stellar combinations and others that fell short to the former.

Nevertheless, with cocktails and canapés provided by Cova; it definitely made the event that much yummier and indulgent.

It's Bling Season again!

I think that everyone likes a little bling in all the creative ways available. Whether it's that big shiny rock sitting atop one's finger or some understated shine on a cufflink.

Singapore's inaugural JewelFest is back in town starting this Friday October 9 and lasting till October 18 in front of Ngee Ann City. I'll be going to their Official Opening so stay tuned for some pictures later on!

On a side note, I promised that I would do an entry on the MaxStudio fashion show I attended but it seems like all the photos have miraculously vanished off my darned camera...

She never looks overdone and always looks comfortable in whatever she's wearing. Psh, I'm officially jealous.

BCBG MaxAzria: 20 years of fashion

Before I headed down to Indonesia for a quick getaway, I attended the BCBG MaxAzria fashion show celebrating 20 years of their brand. It promised a night of cocktails, fashion and shopping provided by BCBG and Harper's Bazaar, but alas; promises are always meant to be broken.

I know I've seen BCBG do better. There are a billion more things in their archives that seem to be worth something more to look at than what was presented that night. The night started out well, guests checked in at the front door of their standalone boutique in Paragon and were promptly whisked inside for some drinks and canapés. We were free to browse around and enjoy the light music and the specially discounted items that night.

I thought I saw some pieces that caught my eye, seemed to be a little more worthwhile. There were tailored separates that could take you from day to night, layered dresses, basics and classics alike and their signature gowns lightly touching the floor. So then I thought to myself it wouldn't be all that bad - there are some great pieces here that are worth investing in or worth looking at in a fashion show. I was pretty much deadpan wrong that night.

There were definitely more misses than hits in this collection. BCBG is famed for bodycon dresses, shirts and skirts or then it does the complete opposite and goes for loose, flowy, goddess-like dresses. Never something that was a sort of compromise in the middle. Perhaps it really was quintessentially BCBG but for some reason - there was something missing the pieces shown that night and this time; maybe it was just due to the poor styling on their part.

Here are some of the pieces that I thought were alright. You can't really go wrong with black and these are some of the key elements BCBG uses over and over again in each new collection: an LBD, some bodycon skirt and a bodycon dress à la Hervé Leger.

I just don't get the use of sunglasses indoors... and at night! I know it's a showcase of BCBG fashion but really, must we throw in everything possible?

Then some of the items I didn't really think worthy of any notice - but still popped up anyway. What happened to simple draping? To long, grecian goddess silhouettes? What happened to sleek separates and flirty cocktail dresses?

It seemed just like a mish-mash of bad styling. Who wears a beanie these days? Or since when did BCBG look grungy? Why does a nice, pink and flirty cocktail dress remind me more of drapes than an actual garment? I have a million and one questions pertaining to the styling of that night because when I come to think about it - the whole collection could have been improved 150% if things were just re-ordered and re-thought. In other words, our friend 'coherence' was absent that night.

I just had to post this photo up of a woman (not the one on the foremost left) and her entourage of daughters. There were four of them all dressed in matching hues and cuts of dresses with similar haircuts and small Gucci bags. Family doesn't get any more united than that.

So it was a pretty small and somewhat private affair. There were good canapés (although too few to go around) and a great atmosphere. Everyone seemed to somewhat enjoy themselves and I'm sure BCBG and Harper's Bazaar snagged a few more loyal customers along the way but in my opinion - for a brand such as BCBG; styling is everything.

Breaking the Hiatus: Surabaya Street Style

So I haven't exactly been the epitome of punctuality or updates so I'm just going to post a quick picture up while the big stuff is still under construction. I've been away from Internet and from the computer for about two weeks now on account of the fact that I went to Surabaya, Indonesia for a while.

It was marvelous! A lot of food that I've missed and will continue to miss and having my bestie there isn't all that bad either. Speaking of, I'll leave you with a picture of her which I think is simplicity at its best.

One cannot go wrong with a jeans and t-shirt combo and her tall, lanky frame obviously helps. But what I love about this is that bag - the blood red bag makes the whole outfit pop. Then there are the subtle accessories that accentuate and not overwhelm: stuff to think about eh?

Vogue Soldier: Melanie Huynh

It seems like most of the people I intend to consider some figure of fashion to be inspired from are Vogue employees better known as the "Vogue Soldiers". Being one of the best high fashion magazines known for its editorial, fashion forward spreads along with great journalistic pieces; it is definitely a staple for any fashionista.

This time at least, I lay testament to an Asian (or at least half of one), Melanie Huynh a Vietnamese-French Voguette working at Paris Vogue.

Mélanie works as an assistant stylist at Paris Vogue under the tutelage of the famed Carine Roitfeld (editor-in-chief). It seems like a requirement not only to be fashionable but beautiful at the same time! Note that on the picture above, Mélanie is actually pregnant. She's concealed her baby bump underneath all that fashionableness and still has those signature lithe legs. It also doesn't hurt that her Eurasian features means having a great bone structure too!

When it comes to her fashion style, it's evident that the likes of Carine Roitfeld and Emmanuelle Alt has rubbed off on her. However, Mélanie never loses that signature style which is quintessentially hers. Basics and monochromes make a majority of her wardrobe and she never forgets to accentuate those legs she's known for. The mix of different textures, tones and basics/statements seem to be her style rules - there's always some great detailing on her outfits that make it fabulous.

I love how she can always manage to be effortlessly chic! It takes a great eye to be able to pull it off without looking too 'done' and Mélanie has definitely mastered that.

Some of my favorite looks from her. I think she looks great in a jean and a well cut jacket. Black has never looked that good and it's also a requirement of Voguettes (specially those in Paris) to constantly be in heels!

Steal her look:

- Monochromes have to be abundant and your wardrobe staple

- Killer, statement heels are a must

- Basics with great eye-catching details are pieces you should look for (something you can wear daily but has that extra edge because of that great shoulder or ruffle, etc)

- Tailored yet edgy pieces are essential in Mélanie's wardrobe

- Remember to show off those legs!

I couldn't resist showing off my recent purchase. (Read: Look what I bought today! On a trip that wasn't meant to be for shopping or remotely any purchasing!)

They were too pretty to resist and it was the last pair that so luckily happened to be in my size. So yes, I might be slightly materialistic or a label whore; call me whatever you want but I'm not the only one and they are just gorgeous. And I just really love shoes! Can't wait to wear them to god knows where.

I'm starting to think that I have a sort of Obsessive Compulsive Shopping Disorder because these are the second pair of heels I've gotten in 2 days. Not to mention 5 new books, some new jeans, shirts, leather jackets, sweaters, make up, whatever else there is to mention.

I need help!

I've been meaning to blog about J.P.D for a while now but I suppose it has just slipped my mind. Amidst all the fashion photographers, street style and editorial alike; Delhomme uses his pens, coloured pencils and watercolours in order to illustrate what photographers capture.

His subjects are focused a lot on famous figures he encounters as well as prominent fashion figures of today's world. I really like how he likes to insert himself in many of his illustrations as if they were photographs. It doesn't hurt that his illustrative style is vibrant and captivating either. Personally, I really like his style! It's carefree and easy to look at.

Like on the illustration on the left, he illustrates himself with Marc Jacobs and Stella McCartney. Albeit the fact that he's being kicked in the head by Marc...

Then he illustrates two of the most prominent street style photographers, Garance Doré and Scott Schuman (aka: The Sartorialist). Rumour is that they're dating!

Of colour and cut

There's a big trend that's been here all this year, cut-off and cropped pants. It surfaced sometime late last year and is here to stay as seen and updated from runways of Spring to Fall. Usually, pants reach at least to our ankles if not lower depending on the style and cut but a cropped pant stops at the ankle upwards. Some people might think that this look is extremely hard to pull off, that you have to be tall, slim and model-esque; but there are ways to make this hot trend work for you! Remember just to follow these tips...

Taken from the 2010 Resort collections, all these pants have something in common - they are all cropped. There are various styles from something scrunched at the ankles to folded or just a clean, lean cut.
For those fortunate enough to have slim, tall, mile-long legs; you're in luck because you can basically wear any kind of pant and it'll surely look good. However, for those of us (like me) who are petite and of average frame; we have to look a little more carefully. Tapered pants (meaning they are smaller round the ankles) will elongate and slim your legs. Most of the pants here possess some tapering qualities. Slim, cigarette pants also look great as they elongate your leg too, by introducing one clean and straight line down the legs.
Remember to also keep in mind where the pant stops. Somewhere at your ankle bone or below mid-calf works wonders for petite figures. This is because if the pant is of an awkward length (like mid-calf or below the knee) it CUTS the leg and makes us look stumpy and bigger than we are. Ankles are an attractive feature as it's a slim part of the leg; accentuating that area will then visually draw attention to it.

From Roksanda Ilinic to Marc Jacobs, all designers have created a slick silhouette and whether they are a little baggier or slouchier still manages to be sharp and chic.

Secondly, I'd like to introduce colour! We all know that it might be hard to work with colour but it's simpler than one thinks. Big trends this season is eye-popping colour in bright hues and jewel tones. This time, I chose yellow as the different shades can complement almost all types of skin-tones. From muted yellows to bright, sunflower yellows; there are varying shades to suit everybody.
As depicted above, runway looks always add more drama in order to emphasise the effect designers choose to employ. But also, many of the yellow pants are also paired with more muted, neutral tones as to not overpower an ensemble. When translating the look to everyday wear; that's a key rule to follow. Don't overwhelm your outfit with too many colours and let the statement pants do the talking. If too many elements are added to an outfit, it'll look confused and sloppy. Or like some little child went crazy with finger paints. So pair yellows with neutrals like brown, black, beige, greys or any other muted colour for an everyday look.
However, if graphic is the way you want to go; remember to keep 'colour contrast' in mind. Opposing colour such as yellow and purple work surprisingly well together. Experiment with shades of blue as well.
But if you choose to have a light yellow as a pant, then don't be afraid to experiment with bright colours for the tops!

For this lookbook, I got inspired by the cut and colour of Giovanna's (right) pants and her easy, effortless look. However, as a colour palette; inspiration arose from Garance Doré's street style pictures depicting the colour combination of yellow and beige. It's summer, fun and effortless. Plus it's a colour everyone's bound to have in their wardrobes.
I combined the tapered yellow pant with a beige billowy top to create a more summery look this time round.

On Clarice: vintage yellow pants(mum's old pants), Esprit white tank top, Zara beige sheer shirt, Sisley belt, necklace from Far East Plaza, Guess wedge heels.

The high-waisted, tapered yellow pants help to elongate my legs while still ending at my ankle bone. The fact that it is slimmer at the ankles slims down the leg and the wideness of the upper part also hides any flaws. As the pants are somewhat more fitted, wearing a looser top helps to contrast that and balances the outfit. If everything is tight and tight, it doesn't necessarily make for a pretty sight and looks as if the life is being squeezed out of you. I brought it in the waist belt to break the colour tones and separate the sheer beige from the bright yellow. The billowy sleeves and sheer material of the top also lend it an effortless summery vibe.

Because my pants are tapered, you could also roll up the hems. This is made possible as the fabric can help 'cling' onto the rest of the pants without unfurling. Rolled up hems are very popular in many different runways and help to lend a chic summery vibe.

I translated these looks into something a person can wear everyday while out and about. For a day to night transformation, simply add a blazer on top or change into a more glamorous top. Keep in mind, with a silhouette like this, tops should be more voluminous to maintain balance.

Cropped and coloured pants 101:

- For petite figures, remember to look for a cropped pant which stops at your ankles or slightly above it. Anything mid-calf or below the knee is a NO NO! because it makes you look stumpy

- Tapered pants are slimmer round the ankles but for cropped pants, shouldn't cling to your calves if looking for a cropped, summery feel.

- High-waists also visually elongate your legs as low-rise cropped pants could result in making you even shorter due to the restricted materials that covers your frame. High waists also help to flatter the stomach making them appear slimmer.

- If choosing a bright colour for your pants, remember to go easy on the top. Experiment with opposing colours however, do work but remember not to overdo with too many cluttered accessories or other different colours. If unsure of what opposite colours are, reference a colour wheel. Stick to one statement look.

- For those with tanned skin, muted colours work well as they accentuate your tan. When opting for bright colours, be bright and bold but don't go deep; it will make you look sallow and even darker.

- For those with fair skin, rich but bright colours will pop on you. Muted colours also work well but remember to add contrast to that by pairing it with a bright top or some accessories. If everything is too muted, you'll look dull and very very fair. Steer clear of shades that are somewhere down the middle (neither muted or bright).

Fashion Icon: Giovanna Battaglia

Many people oblivious to the fashion industry must wonder; who exactly is Giovanna Battaglia? Perhaps you've seen her face around here and there, but what exactly does she do? Giovanna is one of the 'Vogue Soldiers' working as a fashion editor for Vogue L'Uomo (Men's Vogue). Her signature sartorial style (look at the wonderful use of alliteration!) has landed her a permanent fixture in many street style blogs including that of The Sartorialist and Garance Doré. Being a former (and exclusively) Dolce&Gabbana model as well as a stylist, she has a wardrobe many editors would envy. However, there's more to her than merely meets the eye.

Here are some of my favorite looks that she has showcased over the years. Her easy-going and chic style is reflected in the way she wears her clothes, transforming looks from day to night by merely changing a jacket or some accessories. Although keeping to neutrals, she always manages to inject some colour into her wardrobe such as that displayed by those bright yellow pants.

Something that makes Giovanna different from other editors and fashion insiders alike is her ability to re-work her clothes. One wouldn't catch Anna Wintour or Carine Roitfeld in the same outfit twice, but for Giovanna; she definitely has her wardrobe favorites and staples. As pictured above, Giovanna is able to transform the same pair of pants into two completely different outfits with different vibes. She is often pictured with her knee-high black boots or birkin bag and grey turtlenecks amongst others. And she's definitely not afraid to show what she loves by re-wearing and re-working her pieces.

Giovanna favours labels often thought to be slightly unsexy, more tailored than anything such as Marni, Prada or Viktor and Rolf. However, she has a penchant to be able to wear them in such a manner which is far from frumpy. Always effortlessly elegant and classy she keeps people guessing as to how she's going to wear her pieces next.
She always keeps it simple and fresh, layering different key pieces together to create a seamless outfit. It also doesn't hurt that she can show off those legs in a pair of killer heels and short skirts. Her minimalist style with makeup kept to a minimum and subtle accessories are always tasteful and she always knows what works on her.

If only we could all have the same wardrobe and ability to mix and match and transform a look by putting on new shoes, jacket and some accessories. Then again, Giovanna is Giovanna just because of that.

Couture Fall 2009: Valentino

Valentino has become a name synonymous with the signature 'Valentino Red', flowing gowns, feminine silhouettes and Oscar Red Carpet worthy looks. When Valentino Garavani, the label's original designer stepped down from the pedestal in January 2008; it has since had to regain its footing to maintain the splendour that Valentino left with his name.

Taking the helms this time round are Valentino's former accessory designers, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli after Alessandra Fachinetti's unsuccessful run as Valentino's successor. Drawing from Valentino's plentiful archives, Chiuri and Piccioli managed to depict something that remotely resembled something Valentino would design: feminine, detailed, pretty and lacy. Although it might seem like they are rooted in the past following Valentino's shadow; they have also managed to break away from slight conventions by injecting a certain youthfulness in the collection.
I'm really a sucker for anything pretty and wonderfully, frivolously lacy; hence there's always been a natural affinity to Valentino's designs. I remember the time where I used to see my darling old grandmother break into her gorgeous red Valentino gown and how that would make me gush at the impeccable workmanship.

This season is however, not without its faults. The main focus from the two designers being a demure yet youthful combination of black, ruffly lace over nude. Lucid Couture determines some of the best and worst of Valentino's Fall Couture collection.

Left to right by row:

1. An intricately nude ruffled blouse is paired with a springy black lace skirt over the same nude material trimmed with more ruffles! I like how it shows the right amount of skin and how ruffles can remain chic without looking like a court jester.

2. Black lace dress over nude. What's different about this dress is its silhouette as it reminds me a little bit of an oversized t-shirt (borrowed from the boyfriend of course). Love their use of lace masks for a little trompe l'oeil effect too.

3. One of the only shorts to be showcased in this collection. Black lacy shorts paired with a black ruffled blouse and a black jacket embossed with silver flowers. It's all subtle in its own way (specially the flowers on the jacket) but combined together just makes for a darling combination.

4. The little black ruffly dress. Love the simplicity of the black dress with the minor (or not so minor) detailing of that ruffled flap on the side. Some hate it, but I think it's what makes it stand out. Imagine going to a cocktail party with this number on!

5. More of an embroidered lace cutout dress, I really like the fact that it looks like you've stuck on little lace pieces to the base of your neck when really; it's connected by a nude mesh material.

6. Of course, no Valentino collection would be complete without its fair share of gowns. One of the only gowns I thought was decent despite its atrocious wedding cake layered ruffles. I just like the asymmetry of the bodice.

1. The little dress has way too much going on. Prints here and there! Combine that with lace! Maybe some tulle and ruffles! Looks like Valentino puked on it and voilà, this contraption was created. Not really a pretty sight.

2. How are we supposed to take a good look at a dress when one can only fixate on the coat? It looks like a hybrid of a turkey tail and a squid. What would Anna Wintour say?

3. Sometimes ideas are best left to the head. The combination of the skirt and the nude blouse could POTENTIALLY be something marvelous. However, in this case it just didn't work. The front of the skirt with ruffles-a-plenty reminds me of those coral in the sea. Then there's that weird, prettified Darth Vader neck cape thing going on...

4. Little black dresses are musts. But not when it looks like you've stuck a turkey on to your back. Why the unnecessary ruffles?

5. And we are back to gowns. This one looks like a dismally overwrapped Christmas present. With bows and ruffles aplenty. Or one of those crackers you pull to get those little treats inside?

6. I don't know what to say to the last gown. Shapeless with weirdly shaped 'ruffles' to boot. Looks like an overactive transmission of radiowaves or something. I know, what must I be thinking? Years of chemistry has seeped into my mind but I just don't like what I see.

Another bizarre thing which permeated throughout the collection was the weird ruffly shoes. There comes a point when ruffles just become a little overdone and with lace, ruffles, organza and tulle aplenty I think it's due time Piccioli and Chiuri done a little once over with an editing eye. They should've stuck to the nude shoes present in most of 'The Hits' pictures.

Nevertheless, I think Valentino has gained some steady ground and we do owe it to these two designers but it'll be another couple of seasons before they finally find their niche and deliver a solid collection.

But, where did the Valentino red go to?

Style on legs: Emmanuelle Alt

There's something about Emmanuelle Alt, fashion director of Vogue Paris that's undeniably stylish. There's no doubt that the whole lot at Vogue Paris are just painfully stylish (Carine Roitfeld, Melanie Hyunh, Geraldine Saglio) but to me, Emmanuelle takes the cake. She stays true to her aesthetics by defying the norm.

She sticks to monochromatic colours, most often favouring an all-black ensemble. Sharp, androgynous and subtly sexy. Some might say "safe and boring" however due to her impeccable eye for fit and proportion; nothing about Emmanuelle is ordinary and plain. She knows what fits and looks good, thus combining these two elements together equates to a word frivolously thrown around as "fierce".

Favouring cargo pants, well tailored jackets (her biker jacket is most definitely a recurring theme), must-have basics, skinny jeans and gravity defying architectural heels; she is confident, seemingly sulky (specially in pictures, perhaps she doesn't like to have them taken?), fabulously cool and elusive - the lucidity with which we understand her image is undeniable.

Maybe we all need to take a little cue from her, all that s**t we throw on before leaving the house looking like an over-decorated christmas tree does not necessarily equate to fabulosity! She is not really one to follow trends, sticking to her own palette she never fails to be stylish. Simple, tailored, slightly androgynous, indifferent and oh-so-cool.

Take it from the boys

The other day, there was a tribute for Michael Jackson at Zirca. Dubbed the "Black and White Party" it was sort of obvious what the prevailing theme for the night would be: come dressed in full black or full white (and you get two free drinks). It was ladies night nonetheless...

Taking up this occasion, I decided to go for a full black ensemble mostly inspired by Michael's sister, Janet and her penchant for wearing 'suits' to red carpet events. It didn't hurt that a lot of Fall 2009 runway trends also teetered on androgyny; embracing the masculinity of a suit dedicated for women. Thanks to YSL who made Le Smoking suit so fashionable, sparking the trend for the liberation of women no less.

All taking inspiration from men's tuxedo, it has been altered to fit a woman's body. I opted to find suits which show off a little here and there which deviates slightly from the traditional black and whites by sticking to one colour.

Left to right

1. Yves Saint Laurent is famed for their suits, after all they are the original creators of Le Smoking. Tapered pants is a fashion trend here to stay after seeing it on the runway for at least two seasons. The use of the leather juxtaposed to these tailored pants create a slick yet feminine approach to the usual pantsuit.

2. Doo.Ri combines the jacket with sheer arms to create a feminine, ethereal yet still defined silhouette. I need to get me one of those!

3. A little something the Sartorialist captured during Paris' fashion week. It's easy and cool and has such understated elegance and nonchalance. Love the leather cut-offs (all the rage this season too)

4. A little Janet Jackson that I tried to emulate (minus the big hair)

So yes, I was being a little 'skimpy' with the no-shirt-under-blazer but I was well covered up thank you very much.

The wide pant always gives you a slimmer and taller appearance while one cannot go wrong with a basic colour like black. As mentioned before, this is a fitted blazer cut on the hips with a cinched waist which defines, shapes and works great with more petite figures.

I find with a more androgynous outfit like this - minimal accessories work better because over-doing it rids of the whole image you're trying to portray. So if you are a person who tends to pile on the accessories - remember to take the last item you put on, OFF!

Launch Party: Louis Vuitton Ion Orchard

As we all know, Ion Orchard's official launch date is 21 July 2009 (keep it on the calendars!), however ever-evolving Louis Vuitton decided that things needed to be done just a little earlier.

Most of you have probably walked by Ion Orchard and have seen people slaving to get Louis Vuitton finished. Day and night the work never stops and today; the official launch party has begun. Celebs, media, fashionistas and tai tais alike have flocked to the much awaited launch of the iconic store known for its leather luxury goods.

Outside the event, Moët et Chandon (also owned by the LVMH company) were abundant as guests happily sipped on their champagne glasses before being ushered in to the lush space and getting a sneak peek at all the treats Louis Vuitton has to offer specially stamped with "Louis Vuitton Orchard Road Singapore". The exclusivity of these goods remain at about 10 per item - specially at the launch party so they're going to be snapped up readily!

The circular and sleek interiors of the Louis Vuitton in Orchard Road dominate with many exclusive goods being sold. Personally - I find it bizarre when people flock to spend lots and lots of moolah on such goods till they have to QUEUE to just get into the store.

Even in Paris you walk in as you please. They don't impose dress codes (meaning you can walk in with slippers if it so please you) and staff don't look at you condescendingly. It's a much nicer shopping experience but well, who knows? Ion Orchard might be the milestone for something new.

It seems like although LV is a luxury brand, it has somehow tarnished its reputation as one increasingly becoming a commodity. But hey who am I one to talk? I suppose it's not like I'm not guilty of purchasing items there either - but that's just my two cents worth.

MJ: Tribute to a fashion legend

I probably write this a couple of days late but it's better later than never. As we all know, Michael Jackson the Great King of Pop has passed on and frankly, I've never been more disappointed in a great star's death... (till Johnny Depp passes away too)

Even though people might say that he's a paedophile, weirdo, plastic surgery fanatic or whatnot; one cannot deny the impact he has had on the entertainment industry. From his dance moves to his fashion; MJ has been an influential driving force to creating trends which are still embraced today.

RIP Michael Jackson 1958-2009

"You are not alone"

Although some might argue that the hyped Balmain jacket was inspired from Sgt. Pepper (by the Beatles), it seems more evident that MJ was more of an inspiration for Christophe Decarnin (Balmain's designer). Indeed the military Sgt. Pepper details might stem from The Beatles but with the infusion of the exaggerated shoulders and slim fit; it seems true to MJ's style. Just look at the similarity!

Of course, that's not the only trend he created. Fedoras, one handed gloves, cropped pants and bomber jackets have popped up in celebs' wardrobes and on runways worldwide.

Hats off to you Michael for not only creating masterpieces transcending generations but for inspiring people everywhere with your one-of-a-kind style which truly, cannot be reincarnated. I'll never forget those weekends where Daddy dearest tried in vain to teach me the moonwalk or just grooving out to "Smooth Criminal" or "Thriller" (yes, I'm guilty!)

Blazey Does It

Felt sort of inspired-ish to get off my lazy derrière and do something for a change. I said I'd do an entry on how to wear this and that so I decided that I love the blazer too much to not do anything about it.

Decided to go with my off-white tuxedo inspired blazer. It has a black lining on the lapel which I find sort of gives it that "I'm formal but not quite" look. Some people associate blazers with work, more formal occasions and being uptight in general. All that diplomacy has gone out the window with the way people wear blazers today - which can actually survive in tormenting Singapore weather.

Tips on how to find a good blazer:

1. Look for a cutting that flatters YOU. Slim fit, narrow, double-breasted, straight, cinched waist, cropped, etc. All depends on what look you want to achieve and what suits you.

2. Make sure you can MOVE in it! I do this test: put the blazer on and cross your arms over as if you're trying to hug yourself. If you can't touch your opposite shoulder while doing this - it's too tight. Secondly, raise your arms up reaching for the ceiling. If it feels strained on your upper arm - again it is too small!

3. Small details are key! Check out the workmanship - the seams, buttons, lining, everything!

4. If you want a blazer in Singapore weather - make sure the lining isn't too thick. Something muslin or something with no lining will work well.

5. Sleeves are usually meant to reach to the base of the thumb so that it doesn't look idiotic when you reach for something and it looks like you're wearing your little sister's clothes.

6. I'm a petite person (162cm) and I find that for a normal person like me; a cropped, fitted blazer works best. But of course, don't be afraid to experiment with different cuttings!

Doing this photo-op; I decided to just go all out and get inspired by the different runway make-up trends available too. Felt like doing a smoky eye so I did my bit of research and settled for Anna Sui's Fall/Winter 2009.

Plenty of other designers using heavily smoked eyes but I liked the complimenting earthy toned red lip used here. I'm nowhere near runway material - so don't start comparing! : )

Love the look at Preen and Roberto Cavalli. The cat eye smoky eye (say that 5 times fast) is bold and smouldering. I don't think one can go wrong with a good smoky eye.

Of course, the rest of the face is kept simple or else you'd look like a hooker.
